I'm rejoicing. There's a new camera in the house--newfangled digital. I don't understand it, but the young folks do. The said they'd take pictures for my blog for me.
Just think how nice it would have been to include a picture of that quilt I finished--the one I told about in the blog entry "...

I baked poundcakes today. You know, the old-fashioned kind that get their name from the ingredients in the recipe: a pound of butter, a pound of flour, a pound of sugar, and a pound of eggs. They're for our church bake sale. Great with tea or coffee. Or keep one in your freezer for a quick...

I was completely surprised by this photo posted on my son's Facebook page.
Thought you'd enjoy seeing it. The date was August 9, 1987.
That's the whole family at our 40th wedding anniversary celebration.

I figure you'd like to know what I discovered in the moment that changed my life. A full-length version of the happening is on my Chaucer blog, "Chaucer ain't like gospel." But for RedRoomers, folks who think a lot about words, here's a condensed version.
I made up a game to see if others could see...

My passion for Chaucer came to me in an instant. Here is the story.
You could content yourself with the surface story of the Canterbury Tales and let the idea of a hidden meaning just slide. Chaucer's surface story has been enjoyed for centuries--and will continue to be. But I couldn't do that. The...

A chat about hiking with a local college student brought back thoughts of the Canyon.
We moved from Chicago to Flagstaff. My husband taught math at the college there. (Now it is Northern Arizona University!) Before the school year began the college did a car caravan to acquaint the newly-arrived...

I've been meaning to tell you-- a short time ago I discovered that my fun book, Who's Afraid of Middle English: A Booke of Lystes, has a Kindle version on Amazon.
That's a kick. :)

After not being able to show the great photo WITH the blog entry about a Rare Treat, I discovered that the picture, indeed, exists. Here it is for you to enjoy, until I figure out how to put the picture and text together.

I made a quilt today! Well, to be perfectly honest, I finished it today.
I haven't made a quilt in years. Years. I love to make dolls and quilts, but life just didn't lend itself to my doing those things for maybe 10 years or more. I kept all the fabric. You understand. Friends would bring me...

A gathering of the youngsters of the clan happened on New Year's Eve during the day. These little characters--a bunch of cousins--see each other on a regular basis. I, however, am not often with them. So this was a rare treat for me.
If you know the family photos at the end of Ensnared by His Words...

I've been out of touch with Red Room for a couple of months. Wow! It was never my intention, but things just got hectic at home. Couldn't get beyond taking care of the daily projects.
Now things have pretty much settled down. Several things have been accomplished. That is, it looks better,...

It'll be a brief visit to the Red Room tonight. Strenuous day of baking tomorrow. Just finished making the filling for the mushroom-cheese pasties. Thank goodness the forecast is for a cool day tomorrow.
Laid in the supply of mead last week. Musicians have been rehearsing. It's all coming together...

Well, I'm tired tonight. Did five batches of poundcake for celebrating Chaucer at the library here in Claremont, CA. I put slices of poundcake in little plastic bags. Easy to hand out that way. I also give prizes of my books and t-shirts every half hour.
It's fun talking to people who come to...

Fr.Tom Welbers will be the celebrant of the Annual Chaucer Mass. Some of you may know Fr. Tom from Facebook. Here are his thoughts about the significance of the event.
On Saturday, October 29, Our Lady of the Assumption Church will once again host an event that is probably unique in the entire...

When the third book of my Chaucer trilogy was about to be published, my friend Virginia Hamilton Adair, the poet (Ants on the Melon, et al), suggested I contact our Claremont city library to arrange for a reading and book signing. It had never occurred to me before.
I proposed the idea to Mr....

It is tempting, but unwise, to underestimate the work of Dolores Cullen. Her direct style, her unaffected enthusiasm for the obscure reaches of Middle English, her openly celebratory approach to Chaucer as the poet who changed her life--this kind of thing is anathema to modern English literature scholars. . . . Luckily for us, she tells it straight, in language aimed at the common reader. . . . Not surprisingly, this account of how [the Tales] came to be written takes the reader on an utterly exhilarating literary adventure.”
—Foreword to Ensnared by His Words--from Clare Asquith, author of Shadowplay
About dolores
I became fascinated with Chaucer as a late-in-life college student. I've written 3 books about the Canterbury Tales and 2 more --one that promotes reading Middle English, and one about my Chaucer research adventure. My aim is to show there is a deeper, truly...
