This is the story of a sister's love, a doctor's ability to overcome, and the wonderful family they grew up with. But it is also so much more than that. It is the story of family grief, while in the public eye. It is also the story of how a single person really can make a difference, sometimes.
I read a lot. That means I read a lot of books. Some are fun, some are non-fiction, some are fiction. I have read books that are boring, books that are interesting, books that help me grow. One of the many books I have read and thoroughly enjoyed is "The Accidental Senator". Dixie Swanson does a wonderful job writing this book. This book appealed greatly to me, perhaps because I dream of the honest politician that can not be bought. This book may be fiction, but it borders enough on reality to keep the readers attention, especially during this election year of 2012.
When Senator Priscilla Adams Logan becomes stricken with cancer and passes away, her sister, Dr. Abigail Adams, learns many secrets. Among them, that a promise to appoint Abby as her sisters replacement was given. How does a children's doctor step into the shoes of a Senator? This makes the book very hard to put down, even for a few minutes. It is an intriguing look into the government of the United States, and the many intricacies involved.
It is refreshing to read about an everyday person, who insists on honesty and integrity. In my own opinion, too many politicians forget these traits. I believe most politicians start out on that train, but become easily sidelined. It is not easy to hold to your beliefs, when all around you insist that you should become one with them. Abigail Adams does a fantastic job holding to her beliefs, even through the adversity of losing her sister, and putting her own dreams on hold.
While there are a few surprises hidden in this book, I found it to be an easy reading, fictional guide to what government should be. Perhaps it is naive of me, but I do dream of the honest politician.
Please do grab this book and read it. Personally, I think this book will appeal to both men and women. It has just the right amount of mystery, family love, and reality to make it an excellent book. I am really looking forward to the next book of this trilogy. I often find the second book more exciting than the first, since the first book is used to setup so much of the story.
