I took a few weeks off from book promotion so that I could “Be My Own Agent.” I am learning first hand as I’m reading other author’s posts that the self-publishing world is an all encompassing endeavor. I realize how important marketing is because you have to let the world know that your book is out there. However, you have to put the best possible product out there as well. So here’s what’s been going on since we last spoke. I’d post a tentative timeframe for the book to be in print as the final edits are being made. I’d get my proofs back and see that corrections were needed. I would then have to work with the editors again to reread and reformat the book so my dates keep getting pushed back. One of the things I first realized about traditional versus self-publishing is that the quality of self-published books weren’t being viewed on the same grade. I understand that the industry is changing rapidly, but as an independent author I can help it along by making sure that the book is professional grade (without errors or poorly edited). I need the quality of my work to stand above the quantity of books sold. So as arduous as it has been, I put back on my writer’s hat to make sure that the book was being presented correctly. For all the money services I’ve paid for, I need to do my part to ensure the overall success of my book. The little things like proofreading and checking for grammatical errors count immensely. I look forward to marketing again, telling the world about the book, doing everything possible to learn and share with others. So it’s back to the future and I look forward to reading and having great discussions soon.
