A little over a month ago, my old friend Michelle McFee, mainstay in the Bay Area music and arts scene since Bob Dylan's San Francisco press conference back in 1965, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Michelle is deeply beloved in the Bay Area. I had an idea, and a nonprofit organisation already in the works. I put out the word, and a whole lot of people came together. The result - well, hell, easier to just point you at the official site:
Go, read. We have contributions for the auction from some wonderful authors (SF former Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman, Agneta Falk, Ayelet Waldman, Michael Chabon, Neil Gaiman, Ben Bova, Alex Bledsoe and Julian Dawson, whose bio of Nicky Hopkins will be out next year), a nicely growing pile of world-class rock memorabilia (donated by the people whose names are on all that memorabilia, and an all-star list of local talent.
We have the venue, the wonderful Glaser Centerin Santa Rosa, California (http://www.glasercenter.com/), and the date (Friday, 19 December). We have the talent - hoo mama, do we ever have the talent.
I'm deeply proud, nearly to actual smugness, of how fast we got this organised: it was two weeks ago tomorrow that I picked up the phone and rang David Nelson of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and said, I want to do this.
Everything's in place. All of it's donated. All of it's for Michelle.
Go, look, check it out. Check out the website, my bio of Michelle, the goods we're listing for the auction. Buy a ticket, if you're anywhere near Santa Rosa: four hours worth of top flight music for twenty bucks.
This one's all about Michelle. Best cause imaginable. And it's going to rock.
