No, not some writers conference somewhere; this was at El Rio, a neat little dive bar in the Mission in San Francisco. Second Tuesday of every month, Kathi and her husband, Sam Barry, play El Rio for a jammers night with their band, Los Train Wreck. Tonight, both Amy and Oscar were hanging out - and we had the pleasure of hearing Oscar play and sing "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" with Los Train Wreck backing him up. The Mambo Kings really DO sing and play songs of love!
Oh, yes, those cookies. Sometimes I sing backup, sometimes I front the band (usually for "The Cover of Rolling Stone", that brilliant old Shel Silverstein song), but one thing I always do is bring my own baked goods, not just for the band, but for the crowd. It's become a tradition. Tonight, I brought some pignoli cookies - little farmhouse dolcettis - rolled in crushed cornflakes. No singing or playing for me tonight, because the multiple sclerosis was kicking hard and I had the shakes and it's tricky to plan on standing or playing when your body's playing Judas on you. But there were the cookies, at least.
