When I presume I’ve done my deeds so well,
I look upon your willowed words and tell
myself there’s really no more point in hoping—
I might just as well be sitting here alone,
that’s the hard truth, toasting shadows, moping
for glory in this world before I die.
We know that second place or worse our own
true fortune is, where just desserts lie.
It would be pleasant, arguably more fair
to consider we’re high-valued in our souls,
that someone somewhere overlooks our moles
and revels in us as I do our pine-tree:
Unappreciated but by me,
in radiance throwing green around the air.
