Janice Joplin* said it best:
Freedom's just another word for
Nothing left to lose
Nothing ain't worth nothing
But it's free!
Janice died not long after recording it of an overdose of heroin. She's free now.
The rest of us aren't free. Some are a little more free than others. Some are complete slaves.
For the most part, we are owned by our possessions. Things that need watching, so no one steals them. Things that need maintenance, so they don't fall apart. Some things that we are compelled to display in public so other people know that we are owned by them.
Some of us are owned by other people. Complete strangers often share ownership and force you not to make a fool of yourself or make you show some respect. God is a big owner. Lots of people give themselves to God all the time. And some of us are owned by our needs and desires. Those slaves are usually called addicts. Janice used to be one of those. The mortgage holder called in the lease one day.
People with lots of possessions to own them usually only see the freest among us on TV living in places like Darfur and Bangladesh. But even they are owned by a strange need to live one more hour.
One wonders why they don't just decide to be free.
*Kris Kristofferson actually wrote the song, but Janice is the one remembered for singing it.
