About Dale
I owe my life to Hitler, though I never met the man. My father was paid to stop Hitler, so there is no conflict of interest. I was given a thunk on the back o' the head by God when I was fifteen, and within a week began to write. I haven't stopped. My first...

Dale, see what I'm doing instead of working on my magnum opus!
Big Faith and little Faith walked along the country lane. If the owl called from the bush, they were to run
from the mouth. If a deer leapt across the trail, they were to jump to a conclusion. If smoke rose from the forest, they were to make waves. If a snake hissed behind them, they were to count their blessings. If the wind were to suddenly howl, they were to step on it. If night were to fall around them, they were to--
Suddenly their cell phone rang. BF answered it. It was LF's daughter. "BF, I'm so worried that my daddy won't remember all those instructions."
BF laughed dismissively. "Oh, ye of little Faith! Oh, ye of little Faith!”

Thanks for the chance to play
...but neither of them knew why. They simply knew. As sure as big Faith knew that she would die alone ten odd years from now she knew that the old screech owl was the secret to her survival today. Little Faith was prone to running and if she suddenly stretched herself into a stride she would, in a counter clockwise motion, set the owl to screeching. And if that happened, big Faith would lose. Neither running nor flight would save her. And it would be as if those ten years were but today.

And thanks for playing.
You nudged me to remember one of my favourite words, "widdershins", which is the old, old way to describe 'counter clockwise'.

...towards Wikipedia, Katherine. (Not that I needed the prodding; I spend almost as much time there as I do on Red Room). The entry for Clockwise reads, in relevant part: "Before clocks were commonplace, the terms 'sunwise' and deiseil (from the Scottish Gaelic from the same root as the Latin dexter, "right". The word is also used for "ready") were used for clockwise. (Of course, deasil (righthandwards) is only sunwise in the Northern Hemisphere.) 'Widdershins' or 'withershins' (from Middle Low German weddersinnes, "opposite course") was used for anticlockwise."

...they were to run into someone who found it wiser to refrain from commenting. Alas, the comment found voice through the refrain. So was it wise? ;)
.......to John Audubon
.......to John Audubon immediately and report the incident. For they knew that John Audubon only painted birds that he had shot himself, and they weren't particularly fond of owls...in particular, THAT owl. But first they had an idea. They would tell Mr. Owl first that Mr. Audubon would be most honored if he would pose for a "painting." After doing so, Big Faith and Little Faith proceeded along the country lane, rejoicing.
