Don't just read this book and then put it away on a shelf. Carry this book around with you--in your pocket,
briefcase, purse, backpack, glove compartment--anywhere as long as you can get to it quickly! You just might
need
it at any point in the day, whenever you hit a moment when your enthusiasm, dedication, or confidence flag. . .
whenever you need a gentle lift, a pick-me-up that works better than chocolate! As you read through Brian's
tender
stories, you will find yourself quoting her, or writing down some of her great one-liners on little pieces of
paper to
tape around your monitor, on your mirror, or on your refrigerator, for inspiration. You will hear her voice
behind
you, coaching you onward: YES YOU CAN!

making dreams come true, August 27, 2001
Reviewer: vanbaelen (see more about me) from Belgium
Even in Belgium Cynthia Brian's book is read by several people, enjoying her way of making her own and
others
dreams come true. It is a book to put next to your bed and read after a long day or to take in your hands when
you
are in trouble. Just read one of the 99 gifts you prefer at that moment and in that particularly situation and you
will
get inspired again for the next day. In the near future we hope to read more of this author.

So funny! So touching!, August 26, 2001
Reviewer: J.R.C. (see more about me) from Washington, D.C.
When I wasn't being moved or thrilled by the stories of her childhood and movie experiences, I was laughing
out
loud. What a gift she has to find the hilarious side of life's little tragedies -- like a disastrous wedding or
cultural
misunderstandings. And what a gift to find REAL lessons in real tragedies, not the mindless homilies we get
used
to hearing. Just dipping into this book during coffee break sends me back to work with a larger perspective
and a
big smile.

Reviewer: Barbara Gabriel from California
The stories make the difference in this heart felt book. We learn lessons and gain profound understandings
from
stories. Cynthia Brian tells stories about her life as a mother, an actor, an acting coach, and a friend that teach. I
thoroughly enjoyed each chapter. They inspired me and motivated me to continue to pursue my dreams. As a
Therapist, I recommend it to anyone and have recommended it to my clients.

My favorite kind of book, August 23, 2001
Reviewer: treepeople (see more about me) from Northwest Washington State, USA
Cynthia's book is my favorite kind; one I can pick up when I have a spare moment, and read a short article that
really fulfills me and recharges me. It's full of humor and heart, provokes thought, and is good medicine for a
mind
tired after a long day or needing a boost to start a new one. I'm always thinking of a friend or family member
with
whom I want to share certain insights, and pass along some wisdom. And I know what's on my gift list for all
my
favorite people! Kudos to Cynthia for putting together such a treasure.
Cynthia Brian Does it Again!, August 29, 2001
Reviewer: Ivan G. Burnell (see more about me) from Center Ossipee NH
"Be the Star You Are" claims to have 99 gifts, which are really one BIG gift, the gift of life divided into 99
easy to
digest and easy to use gifts that will change your life and how you look at and deal with people. Th whole
book
sparkles with Cynthia Brian's personality. You will feel that you want to know her better when you read it and
you
will be looking forward to her next book. Like any great book, the benefit to you is when you apply what you
read
to your own life. So do it! You will like it! Oh yes, you have to read it first!

Cynthia Brian inspires the courage to dream!, September 2, 2001
Reviewer: Elisabeth Rose from Santa Fe, NM United States
I enjoyed Cynthia's book from cover to cover, although it could also be enjoyed a chapter at a time read in any
order. The point Cynthia makes through the telling of her own personal stories is that we all are unique, having
special gifts and talents--that with courage and perseverance--can be developed to their fullest potential so that
we
can truly become the "star" we are. Each story embodies a "gift", such as abundance or patience, that when
recognized/applied in our lives, together become the building blocks upon which we create our dreams. At the
end
of each story (of which there are 99)she has a simple but effective exercise that can "awaken" the qualities of
that
gift within us. Through these down-to-Earth, real-life stories Cynthia inspires us to feel confident that our
dreams
are attainable if we only dare to dream and believe in our dream. As a teenager actively pursuing my dreams I
turn
to Cynthia Brian's book often for inspiration.

The Latest GREAT Author, September 7, 2001
Reviewer: Stan Dugas from Portland, ME USA
There are three types of 'Self-Help' authors.

The Wanna-be Greats who tell you what to do and have no idea about how you should accomplish these goals.

The Imitate Great who tell you what to do and promise that if you simply imitate them you will achieve success.

And The Great who show you how to discover who you are, define what success means to you, and give you action
items to help you achieve this greatness for yourself on your own terms.

Cynthia, with this book you have reached the level of a GREAT author. Thanks for a wonderful and useful tool that
anyone could use to achieve his or her own success.

A book for life, September 27, 2001
Reviewer: Marcia Welch from Lafayette, CA.
I carry this book in my brief case, handy for "stolen moments" of reading and sharing. I am sure I have read each
insightful and entertaining story at least twice. Cynthia's 99 gifts for living life has made a difference in my life; she
reminds us to strive for our fullest potential each and every day. This is a book that should be shared with others; a
gift that will inspire and encourage a higher plateau of living.
Yes, I am a star, and am shining more brightly because Cynthia has reminded me to live and love life.

On November 8, I attended a great event: Amazing Woman’s Day, a Marsh Engle production. And sure enough, I met a really amazing woman, Cynthia Brian. Cynthia is the author of a great book, Be the Star You Are: 99 Gifts for Living, Loving, Laughing and Learning to Make a Difference. Big title, big book, filled with big ideas.
I like everything about this book, beginning with the title. Like Cynthia, I believe that we are all stars – we just need to find ways to showcase our brilliance. In Be the Star You Are, Cynthia provides 99 ideas, she calls them gifts, to help you showcase your brilliance.
Each gift is explained in a few pages, followed by an exercise to help the reader make the most of it. For example the exercise that accompanies “The Gift of Optimism,” one of my favorite topics goes like this…
• Stand up tall. Reach as high as you dare. Stand on your toes, and reach for the stars. Imaging yourself flying to the stars and landing on a twinkling surface of heavenly light.
• Now, bend over and fall limply to the ground. Imagine yourself continuing to fall, being sucked deeper and deeper into the earth’s molten core.
• Stretch upward again. Make circles in the air with your arms, sweeping them around you as you jump high off the ground.
• Which feels better? Do you want to reach and soar? Or fall and sink? In life, you can be an optimist and reach for the stars, or be a pessimist and collapse into the earth. That’s your choice.
“Twinkling surface of heavenly light,” “earth’s molten core;” Cynthia certainly has a way with words.
More important, she shows her readers how to make the most of the 99 gifts in her book by providing such interesting, fun and useful exercises.
I won’t list all of the gifts that Cynthia discusses in Be the Star You Are, but here are a few of my favorites….
I am grateful for Cynthia’s words about the gifts of abundance, acceptance, affirmation, balance, celebration, choice, cooperation, determination, dreams, enthusiasm, forgiveness, friendship, gratitude, hope, humor, joy, knowledge, miracles, passion, perseverance, reflection, responsibility, serendipity, spontaneity, truth, understanding, wisdom and you.
Last week I featured President Elect Obama’s book, The Audacity of Hope. Hope is powerful. Be the Star You Are is a hopeful book. But with hope comes responsibility. Cynthia challenges her readers to accept responsibility for their lives and success. She says, “You are unique. No one has ever walked the earth with your exact combination of inborn and acquired strengths, weaknesses, skills, foibles, talents, frailties and experiences…I challenge you to become the star you already are…I’ll provide the guidance. You provide the guts.”
I like the way she thinks. Do yourself a favor. Pick up a copy of Be the Star You Are. Read it. Savor the writing. Do the exercises. And become the star you are.
