Brave the New World
When we think of addicts, we think of people without opportunities, education, or lives worth living. We think of the streets, violence, stupors, and lack of restraint. Sometimes we think of celebrities and musicians who live a life of sex, drugs, rock and roll. What we don’t contemplate is that addiction is a disease that can inflict its nasty hooks into anyone, anywhere, regardless of race, religion, sex, standing, or financial acumen.
Dr. Steven Farber was a prominent, well-respected cardiologist who from all outward appearances had life by the tail. Family, status, money, and a thriving practice, he would have been the last person on your list of possible drug addicts. Doctor Farber was a God to his patients, staff, and friends. Yet, he hid a deep dark secret that almost destroyed him, ruining relationships, threatening his medical license, and causing distress in those who loved him.
He candidly chronicles his journey into despair, danger, and desperation and his rise to sobriety with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous in his eye-opening book, As Sick as Our Secrets. Dr. Farber is an accomplished writer, open, vulnerable, and remorseful as he shares his story so that others may see themselves. Having been sexually abused by a trusted friend in his youth, Farber carried the shame and guilt into adulthood, hiding his lack of self worth behind his doctor’s white coat. With failed marriages, estranged children, and unmanaged stress levels, he delves into the shadowy underbelly of sex and drugs until it is almost too late to resurface to the light.
Yet, he found his North Star and today reaches out to help others find theirs. As Sick as Our Secrets offers hope to the hopeless, and help to the helpless. For anyone who thinks they are beyond rescue, this book is a lifeline. A dark past can become a bright future. As Steve so accurately writes, “Make no mistake about it, the diseases of alcoholism and addiction are fatal. It is important to understand that we achieve our own sobriety by giving it away, and we have to give it away to maintain it.”
I had the opportunity to interview Steven on my globally broadcast radio program, StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!® This soft-spoken, deeply spiritual individual touched my heart with his heart-wrenching history and dedication to living the rest of his life soberly on purpose with love and caring for those in pain and trouble. He is braving a new world without addiction as his deadly companion.
If you know someone who is suffering from a secret addiction and want to encourage treatment, As Sick as Our Secrets is just what the doctor ordered.
