Philanthropic gestures by the very young is so very refreshing to see because charity is not a characteristic that I associate with the very young.
Memories of my children during the terrible two's are rife with: "I want …" and I do not remember much of a shift from that approach for a significant period. But when I heard a recent interview of six year olds, done by the CBC, I was pleasantly surprised at the shift and awareness that many young children have of those in areas that have not.
Perhaps we could all take heed, especially during this post period of so much giving, which often times is not really necessary and at times on the point of being meaningless. How much more meaningful and enduring to give to an individual in another part of the world a chicken or a goat and to know that the gift will continue to keep giving. The gratification will not be instant and soon forgotten but rather ongoing and remembered daily while the eggs are collected or the goat milked.
