A feast for you / a feast for me / a feast that goes from A to Z / a feast for us and several guests / a feasting full Thanksgiving fest! / our table's set / our friends are here / we'll eat from now until next year!
Thus begins a rollicking, boisterous potluck, to which each animal brings an alphabetical dish (Bear Brought Banana Bread, Biscuits, & Butter, for instance). Brightly illustrated by Jose and Ariane Aruego, it's a cheerful paen to enthusiastic once-a-year gluttony, this title is read aloud annually at many Thanksgiving dinners. It's bookended with a second poem:
We ate our way/from A to Z. / Enough for you?/Too much for me! /We ate so much/ There are no scraps/ it's time for our Thanksgiving naps./ Our sleep is deep/ and many snore./ When we wake up/ We'll eat some more!/ O thanks for friends, for foodand cheer/ I'm glad Thanksgiving's ONCE a year!
