I'm opening my organization to new members, encouraging people from the farthest flung places on the globe to join the "10 Second Club".
No, I'm not referring to any act of speed or endurance, I'm talking about folks who intend to watch ten seconds or less of the coverage of the Olympic Games in London. Honestly, why should anyone give an odorless fart whether or not some steroid-swollen jock beats the previous world record, set by another steroid-swollen jock? It boggles the mind.
China and the United States, neck and neck in the doping sweepstakes...after all, their country's pride is on the line! Their stature in the world. "We're number one (at drugging)! We're number one (at developing masking agents)!"
Gotta state the obvious here, kids: if you're a top five athlete in the world these days, chances are, you're juiced. Which means you're a cheat and your records and achievements amount to a gigantic lie, a mockery of human possibility and gamesmanship.
These incredible, mind-boggling times and scores that are being knocked off, it's all because of superior training, right? Better weight machines, better coaching and stream-lined sneakers.
Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson ran the 100 meters in an unbelievable 9.83 seconds in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul--and ol' Ben had more 'roids floating through his system than a stableful of milk cattle. Sprinters these days are easily topping his inhuman time; I believe the current world mark is 9.58 seconds.
And what does that tell you?
Years ago, a story appeared in OMNI Magazine called "The Mickey Mouse Olympics". It was a marginally SF tale about a future Games where the participants aren't merely drugged up, they've been genetically modified. The tale was by Tom Sullivan and if you haven't read it, see if you can find a copy. It's a classic. And it aptly sums up the cynicism I experience when I see all the hype around the Olympics, even serious news-gathering organizations and sites devoting far too much coverage to a morally compromised event, a congress of dopers and their enablers, cheats who expect us to revere them for their dishonesty and celebrate their tainted achievements.
