Quite the haul this Christmas, the fat guy with the biker beard doing me a great service by leaving some wonderful books and DVD's under my Christmas tree.
As I've written previously, in 2011 I'm taking the "100 Book Challenge". Happy to report I received three or four tomes this Christmas that should get my year of reading off to a running start: Fernando Pessoa's The Book of Disquiet, Jim Shepard's collection Love & Hydrogen and the latest installment of Michael Palin's diaries. And when I neded to rest my eyes from all that reading, I can watch the first season of "Mad Men" or "The Wire" or Philip Groning's remarkable documentary on the monks who live out their lives in Grande Chartreuse, a remote monastery in the French Alps ("Into Great Silence").
Smart reading, smart viewing. With all the selection out there, why the hell pollute your mind with junk and eye candy?
Merry Christmas and happy New Year, folks.
All the best in 2011.
