Under a Red Moon
Five figures are suspended in mid-air before the shape of a red moon. Four are holding the same position. One is running in place as they all slowly descend to the floor.
Four arrive at their positions in a broad circle of light.
The fifth continues in a running motion, and when making contact with the ground, is released in a burst of speed with strobes following him.
A small strain of background music begins to. A cello, viola and violin. Each breaks into discordant hymnlike phrases. Red light bursts onto the floor in front of the stage. It then slides ups and discovers the lost fifth soul, who now appears to be rising up through the light as if it were growing him into existence again. His head writhes and twirls on its axis. The light fades painfully.
One of the four other figures begins to move slowly forward in an exaggerated walking motion, reaching for something in the darkness ahead. He is followed by a blue light that seems to sink into the very pores of the moving figure. One leg is encased in black cloth that seems to deny the light. Indeed, it does. A leg drags, and another arm. A sprinkling of small red laser beams trickles down the leg as if it were bleeding light. The figure stops, clutching the leg with one arm, then collapses in a solitary chair that has risen up from the below the floor.
The three other figures now begin to walk in a line, again with exaggerated motions, reaching back behind them as they are circling the figure on the chair. The three stringed instruments shift their discordant playing... into streaks of sound as each figure dips at the knees when they move past the seated figure. Each thrashes an arm aloft as they go, not quite striking the figure with their fists or open hand. Light pops from the floor in bursts with each movement. The figure in the chair shifts slightly, lifting an arm that slowly becomes illuminated. A pen is held in the hand. The figure is writing something in the air. The instruments mimic the motions in sound.
From out of darkness comes the fifth figure again, whose silhouette crosses the the other three who are departing the floor. All are backlit by deep blue light. A deep red moon remains projected on the vast blue background.
The shape of a clock, projected in light, emerges against the back wall. The stringed instruments pluck the apparent ticking of the clock. The seated figure taps one foot to the sound of time.
The fifth figure circles the stage and finally kneels to place his hand on the tapping foot. The other leg of the seated figure shoots out straight and shakes. Both figures shiver with surprise.
The three other figures walk in a row across the floor again. They swing their arms as if in unison, yet agitated. As they grown nearer they grasp their faces and heads, pointing together at the seated figure and his kneeling companion.
Light flashes directly into the faces of the three figures, illuminating their anguished expressions, then moves slowly across to the pair of seated and kneeling figures. A staccato burst of colors passes back and forth between the two groups and the huddle the pair slowly sinks through the floor as broad swathes of color congeal around where they once huddled together.
The three figures walk over to where the pair once sat. They gesture toward the direction of the white light now shining on their faces, blocking the light with their hands. The light slowly begins to fade, and as it does, the three also sink through the floor.
When they are gone, a blue light covers the area where they once stood. A quivering beam of red appears and and moves slowly across the stage, arriving at a lone, unidentified figure. He is bathed in red light, then it fades, replaced by the shape of a red moon in the background.
