Now that Social Media dominates as the forum for public commentary on topics political, religious and cultural, you do not see as many bumper stickers on vehicles. But the other day in traffic, I pulled up behind a Toyota Matrix (same make and model that I drive) and was intrigued to see a sticker on the rear car window that said ZOMBIES with the “O” turned into the Obama logo used in the last presidential campaign.
There have been a lot of accusations pointed toward Obama supporters since the 2008 election. That they are socialists. Pie-in-the-sky liberals. Naïve progressives. But ZOMBIES? That makes no sense at all.
The bumper sticker obviously is intended to suggest that Obama supporters all fall mindlessly in line with whatever the President says. But clearly that is not the case. In fact one of the problems Obama has had to face is a disparate voting bloc that abandoned his party during the 2010 midterm elections. Obama supporters did not turn out to vote for Democratic candidates in the midterms and Republicans took over Congress (but not the Senate) as a result. If Obama supporters were indeed political ZOMBIES they would have marched to the polls and voted for Democrats without question. Instead many of them ignored the urgency of the midterm election, perhaps figuring that everything would be okay in America so long as Obama is president. But they were wrong.
In fact it was independent voters who most frequently either voted against Obama or did not show up to vote in the mid-term election. By definition independent voters are not ZOMBIES because they swing from party to party depending on who they most think represents their views.
So if the bumper sticker is pointing ZOMBIE fingers at anyone it appears to be the people who oppose Barack Obama as president. And in fact we find greater evidence that Obama’s presidency has turned his opposition into partisan ZOMBIES who will vote for anyone, indeed anything that walks, talks and shows flesh (especially white flesh) different than Barack Obama.
The Tea Party certainly marches around like howling zombies. Gathering in small numbers, Tea Party Zombies are recognizable for their narrow agendas that they repeat like ZOMBIE mantras. Less taxes! Shrink government! That’s about the extent of their ZOMBIE-like ideology. Captured in the harsh light of day or in the glare of TV cameras, Tea Party ZOMBIES are prone to emitting drool as they push up their bifocals and scream harsh words about taking America back.
The other ZOMBIE crowd is Republicans who follow the cult-like meanderings of Birther ZOMBIES and other conspiratorial ideologies created in an attempt to undercut the legitimacy of the incumbent president.
The current King of ZOMBIES is Congressman Paul Ryan, whose Pathway to Prosperity or whatever it’s called demands severe cuts to all sorts of social programs including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. And there’s good reason. The Living Dead don’t really need health care or security in old age. Further proof that it is the Republicans, not Obama who represent the interests of ZOMBIES in America.
And should we forget that followers of Rush Limbaugh call themselves dittoheads? How much more ZOMBIE-like can you get? Followers of Glenn Beck, Fox News, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity similarly evidence little appetite for factual examination of the opinion-based, partisan fare of these ZOMBIE lords. Their followers repeat Republican talking points as if their brains have been removed.
So next time you pull up behind a vehicle with an NRA sticker, a Jesus Fish or a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker, do yourself and the nation a little favor and get out of your car at the traffic light. Walk with your arms sticking straight out. Remember to drool a little as you walk stiff-legged up to the car in front of you moaning “Government bad! Free market good! Obamacare bad!” You will be instantly recognized by members of the real ZOMBIE community, the conservative right. And welcomed with open arms as long as you have a checkbook and a voting card.
