Tattoos And Tidal Waves
I enjoyed the photo & interview very much. I thought this might interest you:
SNAKESKIN
Adding dazzle to iridescence, dazzle and
whorl to where there was already only dazzle,
his brother anesthetized and tattooed
snakes, sometimes repeatedly, waiting for
the new-tat scar to heal, going back
half a dozen times -sometimes even more-
layer upon inky layer, to ensure
just the exact shading here, the perfected
most minute detail there, before finally
bashing their skulls and skinning them.
His work was sometimes pure geometrics
-diamonds on or within diamonds, rings
within rings-or sometimes a skin, laid out
beside another skin, and yet another,
perhaps dozens, formed a larger tableau,
perhaps a surreal landscape, a rocky coastline
with a turreted castle or a fair copy
of a Japanese blockprint tidal wave,
Fuji in the background, two small boats
about to capsize under the crest,
the crew straining at their oars, hoping
only to see their wives and children
one last time; each drawn face
tattooed on a snakeskin's scale.

Very nice -- did you just write it? I hope you try to publish it; if it hasn't been published already.
