This Is What A Librarian Looks Like
Blog Post by Cheryl Rainfield - Feb.17.2012 - 1:20 pm
You know the stereotype of what a librarian looks like–wire-rimmed glasses, hair pulled back tight, finger up to the lips shushing people? It’s just not the way librarians are. Doubt me? Go check out This Is What A Librarian Looks Like–a blog where librarians from around the world post images of themselves. I love poring through the many different images of librarians. (You *know* I love librarians–the ones who help get our books into readers’ hands!)

Cheryl,As a country boy in
Cheryl,
As a country boy in northern Wisconsin, before attending college I knew only two librarians--the one in my high school and the one in the county library. They both fit almost perfectly the stereotype you sketched in this post. I stood in complete awe of them, feeling utterly unworthy in their presence and imagining they had read every book on the shelves and were all-knowing and infallible.
Then I met a base librarian during my service in the U.S. Air Force who shattered the stereotype in a positive way and changed my perception of librarians forever. From my curent perspective in old age, I realize this revelatory experience was but one of many initiations into the "real world" about which I knew so little as a child.
Brenden, I'm so glad you met
Brenden, I'm so glad you met another librarian who gave you a different view of libarians, a more positive one! I think it's especially easy as children to be intimidated, especially if someone is stern or there are a lot of rules. I was intimidated as a young child, too. But there's so many different kinds of librarians (people), and many make it a joy to be in a library or love books.
I am so thankful that I had a wonderful school librarian from grades 3-6. She created a safe haven for me, listened to me when no one would, and gave me new books that stretched me.
