After 20 years, the theatre/gallery opened in Mogadishu, Somalia. Director Abdi Dhun said on NPR that artists in Somalia have been murdered just for drawing (not Muhammad, forbid) but drawing or painting anything. With that background, the theatre opened Monday even though walking outside after dark is extremely dangerous. A few hours earlier, mortars exploded nearby but the show went on. Director Dhun was asked how many attended. When he estimated over one-thousand -- it astounded me. Just imagine, performers, painters, and a huge audience showed up to enjoy art, music, and a play –- all, possibly risking their lives for the sake of art. My, how much I take for granted.
