Nº63 Transmutation: Hot Air Into Hot Water

I really ought to be keeping my head down. I’ve done it again. Everytime I voice an opinion, I lose potential readers by the thousand. What is the publishing equivalent of negative equity? Whatever it is, I’ve probably got it. I am ‘left wing’ and try to write ‘literary fiction’. As far as I can work out, these are both terms of abuse, and in some obscure way put me on a par with Hitler. How so? Well, it has something to do with this . . .

 The best was seen in the mechanics of one of the world's greatest democracies, in the engagement of its functionaries with the people they represent, and in that selfless heroism of ordinary people who do not hesitate to have a go and tackle a man with a gun in his hands and hatred in his heart. The worst, of course, was that the gun and the hatred were coupled.”
