You Don't Have to Be Christian to Appreciate Christmas

I'd like to take this opportunity, in the middle of Christmas Day here in the southern hemisphere, a warm and sunny day, to wish everyone a happy holiday.  I know I probably come across to many of my readers as something of a grinch; I don't really celebrate the holiday; but, I understand the attraction of the day for others.  I do appreciate and fully support the ideals of giving and sharing that is associated with this holiday; I just wish it could apply year round.

Having said that, I also strongly believe that Christmas, as a philosophy, has no specific religious connotation; or, it shouldn't.  It should be, as it was before Roman Emperor Justinian declared it an official holiday, be a time of rebirth and renewal.  A time when the earth is preparing to bring forth new life and sustenance; a time to celebrate our continued existence, and express our appreciation for those who love and support us.

I can do without the gift giving; the greatest gift we can give each other is love and respect.  Take a few moments on this day and let someone close to you know how important they are in your life, and it will be a holiday well spent.
