That is exactly what Five Years and Counting is about.  Cendrine Marrouat, the author, has regrouped five years of poetry and arranged her pieces according to life’s most important stages: birth, teenage years, adulthood, and elevation. Five Years and Counting – Extracts

YOU ARE (p.22)

You are the mystical shadow of the fiery night,

The one who gave birth to my soul’s light.

You are my shelter, my silence,

And revel in patient observation.

You are a shimmering display of sisterly love,

The steady singing voice flying like a dove.

I heard your prayer, gracefully sowed

Across the enduring creation.

You are the bosom friend of my cold winters,

The constant sunny presence born at daybreak.

The ocean guided our path, reflection of the sky

Above us, where God speaks.

For God never keeps freedom waiting.

We have tasted foods of raging spices,

Spoken tongues of dashing fire,

And loved life and its meandering simplicity.

God accompanies those who understand.

We broke through the wall of time,

Reached eternity through the sublime,

And adored the universe...

... and abandon’s immensity.

 THINK UPON THOSE THINGS (p.149)

Hush, baby, hush.

The lull of the world will come.

Nascent dreams and fantasies

Open the door to freedom.

Hush, baby, hush.

Let the tears flow evenly

In the apex of your mind,

And feel the light through your spine.

Think upon those things

That make us human.

Think upon those words

That turn us against one another.

Think about those instants

When change soars into the sky,

When you feel limitless,

Impervious to sorrow.

So, next time you curse the world,

Remember that you are part of it.

Remember your significance

In the eyes of the beholder.

Then, and only then will you be able to think of beauty.

But, right now, hush,

And think upon those things.

SOLITUDE (p.117)

Solitude

Is a path rarely followed.

Solitude

Brings out the finest in us.

Deep within

Is a dream made of stardust

That makes the weakest dazzling.

Seek your own desert island

And turn sorrow into wondrous stories.

WHAT IS LOVE (p.161)

Love is...

Love is...

Sunny Sunday mornings –

The heart’s early warnings –

Adolescence’s first kisses –

Anger’s deep and heaving hisses –

Disagreements –

Firm agreements –

A split second’s distress –

God’s wonderful caress –

That’s what love is!

That’s what love is!
