I wrote a memoir when I was 47 that I have been trying to forget ever since. There is a lesson in it, however. I was in the public eye. I signed with Pineapple Press, a wonderful small publishing house. They wanted to wait until fall. I bolted (contract no longer was valid) and went with another publisher. What was published was very different from what I wrote. It became a "everything you wanted to know...kind of book." I wanted it to be my own story but also that of other women struggling in male dominated careers. I signed off on every page of the final copy (or so I thought). The book was edited twice after that and I saw the final edition one hour before a huge press party. I nearly fainted. My life had been edited. I had a mirgrane for weeks. I needed beta blockers to get through the book sellers convention. Since then I have continued to be a TV and radio talk show host and write a monthly column for a magazine. My two blogs keep me busy along with my radio show. I took a lot of heat for that book (deserved). If there is a lesson there it is be wary when you sign a contract and if you think you are initialing final proofs check again.
I interview authors on my talk show and I try to read every book before the interview. I interviewed Tim Weiner author of Legacy of Ashes and Jackie Mitchard will be on my show July 2nd. There is nothing finer than reading a book and then interviewing its author. All of my radio interviews for the new 50,000 watt station I am on are on my site carolenelson.com
