My novella DELPHINE won the Clay Reynolds Novella Competition and was published as a book by Texas Review Press; I've also published three novels: THE NIGHT ACTION (NAL hardback, Signet paper; Great Britain: Andre Deutsch hardback, Mayflower Books paper; Germany: Droemer Knaur hardcover, Deutsche Buch Gameinschaft reprint), also bought by Warner Brothers for a major movie, MAN ON FIRE (Pyramid Books, paper original), STREET SMARTS (Beaufort Books hardback, Ace paper).  I've recently completed a new novel.

I've published stories in three dozen journals and magazines, including The Main Street Rag, The Hawaii Review, The Blue Lake Review, Clapboard House, The Long Story, Danse Macabre, The Evansville Review, and The New Renaissance.  My collection THE DREAM OF THE FISHERMAN'S SON was runner up in the 2004 Spire Press Short Story Collection Competition.  I received Honorable Mention in the 2006 Dana Prize for Short Fiction and second place in the fourth Louise E. Reynolds Memorial Fiction Awards.  I was semi-finalist in the 2007 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Novella Contest for my novella NAUTILUS and finalist in 2011for my novella WASH N WEAR.  I've also written several plays, including most recently THE WEDDING PARTY, a finalist in the Aurora Theatre playwrighting competition.

My wife, Sherrill, and I love exploring the world; we've visited around 60 countries (they keep splitting and changing name), many of them multiple times. I especially am fascinated by the countries of the Middle East. Some of my friends think it's odd that I travel so much, since I've never had a driver's license. I also enjoy drawing and painting, especially portraits. I'm a fan of old movies, as well, particularly those from the 1930s and 1940s. Sherrill and I garden in our free time, which on some days turns out to be quite a lot. Our daughter, Simone Martel, and her husband, Paul Martel, also are writers. Simone's creative nonfiction book,THE EXPECTANT GARDEN, has been quite successful and is a delightful read -- as well as useful info about creating a garden.
