Currently, where I live, it is not possible to get a DSL internet connection with a third party provider without having a bill from AT&T (the phone line monopoly). AT&T offer "naked" DSL (aka no phone line) but only because they are required by the agreement made for the SBC merger a few years back. However, there are no rules about requiring third party DSL providers to require that their customers have a phone line. That leaves people who don't want AT&T DSL or an AT&T phone line out in the cold so to speak. I'm being forced to pay for a service I do not want and do not need.
With a new "state of the art" service called Ooma, I have free, almost unlimited voice over IP phone service, which eliminates the need for a phone line, however because of AT&T unfair business practices I have to pay for a phone line to keep my Sonic.net DSL subscription.
This is not a free market. This is not fair. This is monopolistic behavior that must be stopped and should be punished. We must stop the backward greedy selfish behavior of these companies who refuse to accept the direction of the market (toward free voice in this case) and attempt to manipulate the market to earn as many dollars as possible.
Please look into these unfair practices of the "Bell" companies and the cable companies (who force us to buy their TV service to get internet even if we don't want it and don't need it).
This behavior is a symptom of a much larger problem we face in this country. We are behind in internet technology. Why are we behind? Because it is more profitable in the short term for these companies to keep us behind. If they can continue to charge for voice data and low speed internet connections, then why pay the upgrade cost? If this were a fair market, companies would be forced to upgrade to keep up with the competitors. Here in California there isn't really competition so AT&T keeps things status quo.
This has nothing to do with net neutrality and everything to do with the fact that technologically speaking, the US is far behind much of Europe, all of South Korea and Japan and even other third world nations when it comes to Cell phone and internet services.
We are behind because it is more profitable for these companies to keep us behind. In this case, greed is trumping freedom. There is a huge market to be found in internet traffic, and there are applications yet to be dreamed of that will be enabled by high speed internet and fast data cell phone access. These markets and killer applications cannot happen while old greedy habit ridden corporations monopolize our data pathways and stifle technological development by stifling competition.
Please do something about this monopolistic behavior. Please find a way to force competition.
