Bullies Come and Go but Your Convictions Shouldn't Change

In chapter 14, in Bless Me Ultima, Antonio's first day of school is met with a fight. Because he his grandmother Ultima is a curandera, he stands out as being different. The kind of bullying he was a victim of was physical. Attacked by Ernie with a football to the face. This insult to him made him want to run away but instead he fought with Ernie. Does this count as religious bullying? Perhaps, but what I noticed is that while most victims are lacking assertiveness, Antonio did not. He stood his ground even though he knew he was smaller and a less experienced fighter than Ernie. This will probably be important in his future as he goes through school. If he lets himself get picked on now, it might become a habit to give up when faced with bullies in school. While I could not condone fighting in general, I think there are times when it is necessary to stand your own ground and let others know you are not a victim. The other part of bullying is knowing how to avoid it. Antonio could have not been there when the kids were getting rowdy. Or maybe he could have simply walked away when they started talking about his family. But again, it is important to know that sometimes there is no choice, and at that point we need to stand up for ourselves.
