I began to do research for my next novel, Sorrowed Souls. I had to intigrate myself within the homeless community. I live in Los Angeles and we have a very large homeless population. I discovered a wonderful organization. the Missionaries of Charity Brothers. Their entire order is dedicated to helping the poorest of the poor wherever they are found. I came to look forward to my Saturday morning experiences of sharing with these brothers and the other volunteers. The premise of the novel has completely changed, and what once was research has now become passion.
What I don't understand and cannot comprehend is how so many amongst us can not be affected by the community of poor and homeless that is growing larger everyday. Obviously we are in the midst of a storm-like economic downturn, but do we just send citizens to the street, watch them wallow and pretend they are invisible? As an author, shouldn't we all put ourselves in their shoes, even for a moment and try to come up with something that might assist? Or do we turn the other cheek just as so many before us have done.
