I was rejected twice by the SF Psychoanalytic Institute when I applied as a candidate. Now, their name changed to SF Psychoanalytic Center, they have asked me to be on their Board of Directors. What is going on?  Psychoanalysis is embattled, "pushed to the margins" as one recent author wrote. Once spawning numerous books a year, it is now almost impossible to publish a monograph. A publishing house devoted to Psychanalysis would go broke. But that seems to be forcing a change. My memoir The Last Good Freudian had been extremely critical of my analysts. Bemused, I asked them if they had read my books. Some had, one woman Dr.validated my perceptions of analysts she knew.  They assured me that the Institute had changed completely, that their views of Freud had changed. That they were open not just to criticism of the Master but to thinking about the ideas of the disciples rejected by Freud. Openess is the key word. Some of them think that If they don't at least try to present a unified field by admitting dissidents and trying to work with them, they may not survive.  I tell them I hope it works..
