In just a few short weeks I'll be talking about Freud as a fictional character to a group of people who either belong to the Austrian Cultural Forum or the American Psychoanalytic Association. Will they bombard me with tomatoes? Or have they--the analysts in particular--gotten more mellow, perhaps open to ideas of once banished disciples? To a less that totally idealized view of their founder? I have a feeling, perhaps unfair, that it has been difficult to loosen up and review some of the earlier thinking
Why is it that I feel that I not Freud am on trial? I tried to give a nuanced picture of a complicated set of triangles in the early circle around Freud. If I just get 10 minutes to read, I'm afraid the picture of Freud will seem too negative. But please, go back to the book, read it through. Believe me, I just wanted to get your own imagination going by suggesting multiple versions of what might have happened. I tried to be fair. Really. So please hold off on the rotten fruit.
