Last week my book Vienna Triangle was ranked number two on Amazon it stayed there moving form the Daily Deal to best in Historical Fiction. It was on the top ten for over a week. And then just as suddenly as it came it vanished. "No longer available."
Up until last week I was like many others hooked on Amazon. It was easy, fast and carried the titles I wanted. It also sold the kindle and and I was pleased to have my book in e-book form.
What happened? Amazon picked this moment to renegotiate their contract with IPG the second leading distributor in America. The terms were so bad that Independent publishers would have been close to paying Amazon for selling books. They refused the terms and Amazon retaliated by pulling the plug on all ebooks provided by IPG. 5,000 titles. While my book was still listed as a bestseller by Amazon, it disappeared.
This amounts to murder and if it works, it will spread. Bryce Milligan the inde publisher of Vienna Triangle and himself a poet and author of award winning children's books, says there was a moment when it looked as if Amazon was a bright star. Now we are literary dinosaurs waiting to see if extinction is on the horizon.
