My play Relativity in Practice - a comedy about time traveling - was chosen as one of 4 plays to be staged (like every year) during the Film Schools Festival in Lodz. I went there very excited about the project - working with a young director and with students from the acting department of the famous Film School in Lodz - where such excellent film makers like Krzysztof Kieslowski, Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Zulawski, Roman polanski, Andrzej Bartkowiak, Sławomir Idziak and many learned to make movies. Last week I went to Lodz where we all met – authors, directors and actors together with the dean of the actors department – a wonderful actor – Bronislaw Wroclawski - in Studyjny Theater. My director - Pawel Maslona - really felt my play and we worked together great. The 8 actors that we have chosen to work with were also very into it and we all felt we are being very constructive.
And then on Saturday the plane crash happened. At first we thought that perhaps it is only a jock, but after switching on a TV we realized that it was for real - never in the history of Poland so many government members were killed at once including the president and his wife.
Even though most of us didn’t really like the president and hoped before the crash that he will loose the next election, we were very disturbed by his death and the death of almost 100 other people. Even the biggest political enemies of our president didn’t want him or his wife to die. The crash reminded us all about how fragile life is and how easy it is to loose it. It made us think about a poem written by a great Polish poet –
Let’s rush to love people, they all leave so fast
their shoes and deaf phones being left behind...
So together we decided to interrupt our work and postpone it to a later date and we all went home.
Very likely the Festival will happen by the end of April and we will continue our work then…
