I may not have looked it, but I was terrified. Someone in the audience at the New York American Imagery Conference, where I had presented a paper and read some of my poetry, had recommended me as a reader for the 1986 Piccolo Spoleto. I was in total shock when I received an invitation from the Office of Charleston's Cultural Affairs. For an almost totally unknown poet, except among my Alabama friends and my school children in the poet-in-residency program, to receive this honor was mind-boggling, exciting--and terrifying.
