In 1993, I studied in Paris at the University of Paris, under the auspices (I just love to say that!) of Brown U. as an NEH Fellow. Once in a while, we were set free to do exploring on our own. This photo, which didn't come out as planned, is inside l'Opéra. The ceiling of this massive, grand building is painted by one of my favorite artists, Chagall. The deep plum, plush seats and the chandelier--the accoutrements of royalty--juxtaposed with this fanciful, playful, childlike ceiling--like being in two completely different worlds at one moment--I choose Chagall's world! The feeling is that the painting could lift that massive building right up into Heaven.
