My publisher's editor left or was fired in the middle of editing my book, Write In Style. Even though I am an editor, no one can edit his or her own work. It's terribly embarrassing to find an error in your own book when you are an editor, but one or two glitches slipped through because a new editor was not hired until after my book was released in 2004. To make matters worse, the book was released without an index, and it needed one. My publisher recently decided not to go to a second printing, having changed the focus of its business, so it sold the few remaining copies to me and returned the rights to me. If I can find another publisher, you bet I'll insist on an editor and an indexer.
