I'm finding this particularly true, from my genre mysteries to the historical fiction I've been writing. From the planning necessary to create plots to digging into the lives of historical personages, writing is my greatest teacher.
I'm working on my first thorough edit of an historical novel at the moment, and it's only here that I'm beginning to truly understand my characters.
