McCarthy — who got word he was being fired from his 31-year post as film critic at the trade paper Daily Variety the day after the Oscars — won't be unemployed for long. He has written books, directed documentaries, and could teach or run a film festival if he so chose. He is well-liked and greatly respected (deservedly so on both counts) in the journalistic and movie communities.

Movie critics and book reviewers will soon be extinct, it seems. Bloggers may soon take the reins, so it seems important that these bloggers know a little about literary criticism.
