Guess The Line #9

If you guessed that yesterday's line was from Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, you're super in my book. This is no dim western. It's blood and gore and depravity - McCarthy's "redemption through violence" book. Not sure how that works, though.
Today's Line - from one of the most famous of all American writers:
