What a surprise to get a lovely message yesterday from a Red Room administrator telling me I am this week's "Rising Star"!
I feel so fortunate to be part of this wonderful community of writers and readers!
Red Room came along at just the right time for me, too, as a new almost-real author. (I won't even add the other obvious part: late-in-life :-) I had an actual book on the way, even though the publication date for "Accordion Dreams" was still many months away.
When I heard about Red Room, I was just starting to think about how to expand my small writing community. I've been blessed with a terrific mentor (Jane Anne Staw) and I'm part of a peer-led writing group that has offered amazing support. I also participate in one of the big national online writng forums that's been a very helpful resource.
But what was missing was something in between. Something that still felt personal, but outside my immediate circle. I also wanted to begin to establish some connection to the local writing community in Northern California. It is a very rich one, as I knew, and for that reason intimidating. (You might not think a performing accordionist is shy, but fundamentally I am!)
So then I read an article in the Chronicle about this new writing community that was getting started. And I figured, well...no harm in trying, right? Maybe they'll let me in...
Thanks again, Red Room!
(And I'm still happy to hear your accordion jokes, although next month's contest will be something different!)
