I took a break from writing yesterday. For one, I’m reading a novel one of my students wrote that I promised I would finish before school was out. Time is winding down, my deadline is quickly approaching, so I figured I better get on it! The second reason was that I don’t want my family to resent the time I spend writing. When I write I’m pretty much in my own world. Not much gets through (unless someone comes and stands over my shoulder). So yesterday was a family day.
Balance is key, I think. That’s one thing I have strived for over the years - to keep a good balance in my life. At times I’m more successful than others. There have been times I’ve had to learn the hard way that I was off balance. The aftermath of that is me falling on my face and shutting down everything. That’s not a balance either. Oh the pendulum swingeth....crashing into one side of the great Grandfather Clock, only to be forced back to the other side with a crash. A nice gentle swing in the center....softly singing, “tick tock, tick tock”...would be nice.
As summer break approaches, I will strive for a balanced schedule. My goal is for a balanced schedule to be habit when Fall comes around, so in preparing for an “unbalanced” November (writing 50,000 words in a month will definitely skew the balance), I won’t be knocked off kilter.
