Rose behaved herself in a lady-like enough manner, but I head-butted every feminine notion Mama took to anxiety over. My Southern Belle mama had unfortunately borne herself a tomboy.

There’s not much tellin what woulda become of me if it hadn’t been for Daddy. If the real me had got smothered up by Mama, then I’d surely be sittin here in adulthood bein some total stranger to my natural self. A lot of people do get their expectations all wrapped up in someone else’s notions and lose sight of who they truly are. I know about this because Mama put a be-a-lady hex on me at a very young age. Daddy didn’t set out to save me from Mama on purpose. I think he just wanted to have himself a boy and I happened along naturally, bein the closest thing to fit the bill.
