I Could Make A Career Out of “Doing” Coffee …
By Bernadette A. Moyer
They say the best deals are made on the golf course, but for me, I do well with having coffee or a lunch or dinner meeting. I could make a career out of “doing lunch” and many times I do! It is all about networking with friends, family and professional associates. What better way to get ahead in your personal life and professional career than to share a meal.
Yesterday it was lunch with a friend in banking, last week it was coffee with my college aged computer guru buddy and tomorrow’s lunch is with my favorite Catholic Nun. A few weeks ago it was a casual lunch date that brought about the possibility of a new career for me. It was so unexpected but I mentioned something at lunch and in just a few hours I had received a phone call and an appointment to meet with the Executive Director for a position that seems to be right up my alley.
These opportunities aren’t accidents they are meetings to share a coffee or a meal and to network. I have made some of my biggest real estate deals over drinks and dinner and I have received some of my greatest professional accomplishments that began with a simple lunch date.
Where phone calls, text messaging and e-mail has taken over for so many of us, nothing beats that old fashioned face-to face meeting that happens when we meet up for a lunch or dinner date. Relationships are so important to our overall health and taking the time to share a meal with a friend or a colleague has numerous benefits for wellness.
Just last week I met up with my old supervisor who also happens to be a Catholic Priest, he is just an all-around good person and always worth spending time with, we are good friends and like family. Our relationship is about trusting each other, supporting each other and lifting each other up.
When I have coffee with my friend Suzanne, it is an automatic guaranteed natural high. There has never been one time that when I left her company my heart wasn’t joy filled. My friend Joy has that same effect on me.
I seriously could make a career out of “doing lunch” I don’t know what my meeting with Sr. Cecelia will bring tomorrow but I know one thing for certain, she is one of the wisest women I know and just being in her company elevates me. She lifts me up!
Earlier tonight I had dinner with my college aged son, my heart is warmed and my soul is uplifted. Life is good! So … let’s do many more coffee dates, lunch meetings and dinners with family, friends and colleagues.
