High on Winning – Go Ravens!
By Bernadette A. Moyer
Our entire area, our city is high on winning! We love our Ravens and we love winning! People are driving around with Ravens flags on their cars; homes are decorated with Ravens flags and purple and black lights. Our grocery stores have purple and black cookies, donuts and cupcakes. I saw a purple bagel at the bakery. In Baltimore City there is a billboard with the countdown until the next game, it shows the days, the hours and the minutes until the Ravens play again. We are all in this together, we want to win! Winning just feels better!
Before the last playoff game everyone was making predictions on who would win and even what the final score would be, I don’t do that; I may have a feeling about who will win. When I learned the Broncos had won 11 straight games, my business and analytical mind set in, they were due for a loss. Statistically they had won so many games in a row; that my feeling was they had a higher probability for losing that game. Well played doesn’t even begin to describe what an exciting game it was. This week we are “counting down” to the next game, honestly I am savoring the win. It feels good. I want them to win again, but if they don’t I don’t want to feel what a loser feels like; I want to extract every second we can from this high of winning.
Of course the camera went directly to the Bronco's Quarterback, Peyton Manning’s face upon the loss last Saturday to the Raven’s, clearly he wasn’t happy, it was definitely the look that goes with “the agony of defeat.” Sports teach us so many things we learn to be a winner and we learn how to accept our defeats. We learn to work in a team environment and we learn to work toward a common goal.
Just like in life, we want to win, losing doesn’t feel good. No one wants to be a “loser” we all strive to be “winners.” Each brings something different, a loser has to stop and reflect and ponder how they might proceed and what it takes to overcome whatever is standing in our way to winning. A winner immediately has a boost in confidence and is happy and proud yet has to temper that with not being boastful. Both winning and losing teaches us so many things.
People gravitate toward the winners, most want to turn away from a loser but the reality is a loser is just a winner turned upside down. Just about every loss in life can be turned around for the good. In losing we can become determined to succeed and we can push even harder toward our goals. Winners tend to take it easy, at least for that moment in time as they savor their win.
This Sunday’s game is so anticipated, our Ravens and the remaining playoff game that leads to the Super Bowl. Every remaining team is marching toward the same goal, they all want to win. But there will only be one team that is declared the Super Bowl winner for this season. It is an exciting time. Baltimore is high on winning, it feels so good, and we are so proud and pleased with our beloved Raven’s.
My husband is famous for stating, “A real fan stays with their team whether they are winning or losing. It is easy to support a winning team, but the true fan supports you when you win and when you lose.” Baltimore has true fans, for years we watched our baseball team the Baltimore Orioles bring home years and years of losing records, this year they surprised us all with a dignified and winning baseball team. Baltimore is famous for loyal fans whether it is the Baltimore Ravens or the Baltimore Orioles. We support our home team.
We are high on winning here in Baltimore, it just feels so good. But in the end whatever happens, whether our Ravens win this game or lose it, we are thrilled for the ride and the excitement of winning! For true Baltimore fans, our home team, our beloved Ravens, they are already a winning team! Winning the Super Bowl will just make us feel better, winning just does that! Go Ravens!
