I was asked by my editor, Alane, at Norton, a few days before Christmas, to create a couple of images for the jacket by mid-January. I told her, I am hyperventilating. I thought I could wait till the entire graphic novel manuscript was finished to consider this aspect of my book. She said to not to panic, this was not going to be the last say in jacket art. We had time. The images would only be for the catalog. I painted these two below and played with the primary colors of yellow and red as you will see in the third image below.
Today, the editors christened this book with the subtitle, "An Ancestral Tale." So the full title is:
"Forget Sorrow: An Ancestral Tale."
Which image do you like better? The layout with the father and daughter facing the reader or looking into the night sky? Do help me. I'd really appreciate it.
When I worked with Alane Salierno Mason 14 years ago, I was getting my first book published. Back then, I fought with her on the art and with my agent on the title. I know better now not to fight for the title and jacket art. I trust the publisher to know what is best in terms of marketability.
