As an attorney who handles adoption cases, I’ve found they run the gamut: for some, the sweetest moments of parents’ lives as they welcome a new life into their family; for others, despair as a birth mother changes her mind and keeps the baby at the last minute. International adoptions are a different animal, as parents spend outlandish amounts of money and two to five years waiting for a foreign child to arrive. Sometimes parents adopting foster children discover difficulties they never knew existed when the child was younger. What I never expected was that adoption would become a part of my own personal history.
