NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

''POETS WHO DON'T READ TEND TO EXHAUST THEIR RESOURCES RATHER EARLY,''  DONALD HALL FAMOUSLY WROTE IN HIS CLASSIC, 'THE WEATHER FOR POETRY.'   THIS WAS ILLUSTRATED TO ME RATHER PAINFULLY  ON LEARNING THAT AN AQUAINTANCE WITH A MASTERS IN CREATIVE WRITING FROM A RESPECTED PROGRAM WAS LEADING A POETRY WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN AND HAD NEVER HEARD OF CAROLYN KIZER OR AMY CLAMPITT.   I WAS AFRAID TO ASK IF SHE'D READ HELEN VENDLER, A CRITIC I REVERE.

THIS IS MY WAY OF SAYING THREE CHEERS FOR NATIONAL POETRY MONTH. YES, ITS ALMOST OVER, BUT APRIL IS, IF NOT THE CRUELIST MONTH, ONE OF THE MOST HECTIC MONTHS ON MY CALENDAR.    AND I'M ALL IN FAVOR OF NATIONAL POETRY MONTH IF IT GETS MORE PEOPLE READING.
