Freedom of expression is what made the Western world the civilized world. In countries, where free speech is valued, citizens are citizens that express their thoughts and opinions, without being persecuted or jailed. While in countries, where there is no free speech, people are not treated like citizens, but like subjects. The problem with the misuse of free speech can be an excuse sometimes to those who promote hatred and violence in the name of race, political and religious reasons. What to say? Or what not to say becomes a debate these days.
People who promote such hatred are not interested in individuals expressing their opinions, rather than then imposing their ways of thinking, which are destructive for society. In Europe, I am beginning to have the feeling that free speech is being suppressed, by the Liberal left, who call everyone who criticizes Islam for far-right Fascists. In some Liberal websites, if you criticize Islam, you are target as a racist, an "islamophobe", a hatemonger etc.
I don't believe in islamophobia because it is a dishonest word, used by Liberals to trump anyone who says anything negative about Islam. You cannot be a racist, if you criticize Islam because Islam is not a race, but a religion, which like others shouldn't be above criticism. When people like Pat Condell, Thilo Sarazzin, Geert Wilders, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Brigitte Gabrielle and other strong critics of Islam have an opinion about the "Religion of Peace", they are often called all sorts of negative names by the Liberal left. The thing that astonishes me about the Liberal left is that they're not realizing that the freedom they are exercising to criticize people like me, Pat Condell, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Geert Wilders, Thilo Sarazzin and others was not given to us on the plate. They were people who bitterly fought for the freedom we are enjoying today.
In the Netherlands, Theo Van Gogh was killed by a Muslim extremist, and I didn't hear a word from Liberals. Geert Wilders who is a democratically elected politician is on trial from expressing his opinion about a religious book. Do you see how infantile can that be? Geert Wilders receives numerous amounts of death threats from Muslims who live in Holland and those who live abroad. The man cannot even speak about such matters in his own country. And no Liberal says a word about such things. When Jan Brewer, the Governor of Arizona speaks about fighting illegal immigration in the state of Arizona and the rest of America, Liberals make complaints about such matters because they want more votes from immigrants.
In many African countries, people don't even have the right to express their opinions on dictators who are destroying their respective countries in the first place. Political prisoners in both Africa, the Middle East, Asia and some South American countries face torture, abuse and death for defending the fundamental values, which the whole world needs. France, which is my native country supports dictators from many French speaking countries like: Republic of the Congo, my country of origin, Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Niger,Chad etc. They do it, so that they can have access to the natural resources easily, while the rest of the peoples in those countries are suppressed and treated like crap! No Western country from condemns Sarkozy or other previous presidents of France for supporting leaders who are suppressing their own people. In the West, the right of democracy cannot work, if there is no free speech, but in Africa democracy is killing people because governments are corrupt and kill everyone who wants to stand up for change, with the help of mercenaries from First World countries´.
In China, Liu Xiaobo who is the current Chinese Nobel Peace Prize Laureate is in jail for promoting Human Rights activities, and for having a critical opinion on the Chinese government. In China, his name is censored because he has called for elections and advocating the separation of powers and the urged the government to be held accountable for its wrongdoings. For this reason, he is serving 11 years in prison. Countries like China, Morocco, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Russia and Iraq, which are not democracies made a decision to boycott the Nobel Prize, which has been given to Liu Xiaobo. Intrestingly, in the West we have been too hypocritical, when it comes to defending free speech, not just in our borders, but around the world. We take our values for granted, by selling arms to countries that are a threat to our security, i.e. Saudi Arabia.
Liberals in the West are even willing to sell their birthright for oil in Middle Eastern countries. We make criticism about China, but we are not as consistent with China as we would be with other countries, because China is a growing superpower. We want to make alliances with another dictatorship like Russia, where journalists are being killed in connection with their reporting and their criticism of the Kremlin. Liberals are not the only ones to blame for this problem. Even Conservatives trade with people, whom we not consider our friends because of their way of treating women, minorities of all sorts and those who have a different way of thinking.
The Western media fears to link terrorism with Islam for the fear of causing offense to the Muslim world. They even fear to show the 12 famous cartoons of Muhammad drawn by Danish cartoonists for the sake of being politically correct. I do believe in freedom of expression and I also believe that it comes with responsibility, but it is our responsibility to preserve it because the next generation will never forgive us, if we continue to take it for granted. Freedom of speech is not negotiable and those who do not like our way of life may stay offended, if they don't like what we do. I am not going to sit here and apologize for my way of life, nor do I want to sell it for the sake of getting blood money from those who do not like us. In my opinion, we don't care about freedom when we don't demand requirements to countries with we trade. We're selling ourselves because we care more about our interests than defending the freedom, which was not given to us on plates.
