Christians don't owe Thanksgiving
There’s an opinion about Atheists like me celebrating thanks giving by some American Christians and Christians from other countries. In their opinion, Thanksgiving is a religious holiday. When I stopped being a Christian for over a year ago, I was asking myself, if Thanksgiving day is worth celebrating. Christians have the aim to turn everything into a religious expression, the reason being seems to be the idea of giving thanks to their god, not other gods. Their point is to make it a Christian holiday( I am referring to some Christians in United States and overseas).
An Atheistic approach on Thanksgiving
It is possible for both Atheists and Agnostics to celebrate Thanksgiving because it’s a public holiday and public holiday does not mean “religious holiday”. It means that everyone can participate. The Christian nature of thanksgiving is degrading to humanity. I am not from United States, but I think most countries around the world should also celebrate Thanksgiving because it gives an opportunity to be thankful for those we have, what we’ve accomplished and much more. It is true that we need to thankful, but that does not mean that it must be shown by giving thanks to God. It’s unnecessary and senseless. Not living in United States does not mean that I cannot celebrate Thanksgiving. I do it because it’s an opportunity for to change myself, my character and improve my ability to be grateful.
Being thankful to people, pets, plants etc.
We can be thankful to people who have helped us make our lives better. We are responsible for what we should be thankful for and it’s not up to me tell people, how to be thankful because people can be thankful in many ways. Very often, Christians are thankful by spending time in prayer and writing poems about God. They do it because they expect to get some kind of a reward from him and they try to lean to the promises of scripture, which they mean, it’s God’s words. Wasting time in prayer and gods won’t bring you the future that you need in your life. The only way you can have a bright future is by investing time in your goals and do what you can to defeat laziness because lazy people cannot be successful. Our pets are best friends to some of us and it's important to give them love too.I am talking to those who have dogs, cats, rabbits etc.not me because I don't like having a dog and I don't like them. Plants give us life and oxygen.
Reaching out to somene else
Thanksgiving is also an opportunity to something meaning like: forgetting ourselves for a while and do something meaningful to help someone else.
Sometimes, the reasons why you’re not happy, it because you’re not doing anything for anyone else. Helping someone else does not have to be about doing big things. You can even make a difference to someone else’s life by, just doing small practical things.
Being grateful to farmers
Being grateful to farmers is a good thing because they are responsible for providing us with the food that we eat. They play an important role in what the groceries we buy in many shopping malls and small boutiques.
Being grateful to our soldiers and veterans.
Our soldiers and veterans render us a huge service, when they fight for our values around the world. They are also the ones who protect our countries from enemies who hate our values and way of life.We cannot forget the sacrifice they make to keep our countries safe and free.
Being grateful to charities.
It’s important that we don’t forget that charities do a great job by helping third world countries improve their lives. They also get in fighting illnesses like cancer, AIDS, diabetes, leukemia etc.
Being grateful for life
Life is a precious and we are only here once. When we breathe, we free and and when we’re we fly like birds.Life offers us lots of things and without it, this planet would be meaningless. The Earth is our mother.
Being grateful for our countries.
I know some of you come from countries where there is no democracy, human rights, free speech etc, but there is still something your country offers. The same also goes for us in the West. We need to be grateful for our democracy and freedoms and the values we share with those who also have fought and died for the freedom we enjoy today. Our countries are part of our identity, whether we like it or not.
