I have recently begun volunteering at a local Boys' and Girls' Clubhouse here in Good ol' Las Vegas. I grew up attending the "club" and for me to see it on the adult side, rather than through kids' eyes I now understand why some of the staff were quite eager to be closed for the one week right before school started. Though the demographic is entirely different, the meaning behind the club, and the way the staff is set up is all the same.
I have had the ability to see one of the auxillary clubs set up for the kids that are 11-13 years old. I remember how crazy it felt to be in it as a kid, and as an adult now, I wonder how I ever survived. One thing is for certain, these kids dream big, and no one can tell them no. I have a feeling once they see exactly what kind of work will have to go into a community service project, and fundraisers, their focuses will change as far as what they want their "fun-trips" to be. This is where I truly believe that they will learn the true value of a dollar, and begin to understand why their parents have to work two full time jobs just to support them.
Hindsight being 20/20, I hope they don't lose faith in themselves or the other people they are working with. Anything is possible with the right drive, and a little direction. Now is the time for them to dream big, succeed better, and realize their own long-term dreams. The club staff is here to support them along with volunteers like me. We hope to fill the gaps with the attention and care they may be missing at home due to parents working crazy hours. May the angels of Mercy be near us, and may God bless us all on our Quest.
