I was walking down the street with a friend's four year old son on a recent evening. A somewhat large man lumbered past us. ( I almost typed "shuffled," but I censored myself). The boy asked in a loud voice, "Was that a monster?" I was speechless. I'm pretty sure that the guy heard him. I felt sympathy for the man. He was black and I wondered if that made the child's comment more offensive. I was glad that my friend's son was also black. I just thought that it would've sounded worse coming from a white child.
OK, so I write about race. Most people don't. What do you people think? When I told my "regular Negro friend from D.C." he cracked up. He had me laughing too. I mean sometimes laughter is a necessary release. Who feels me? Does race determine whether you think this was funny?
