Scene: a restaurant in a major metropolitan neighborhood
Waiter: May I take your order?
Diner: My usual waiter is Godot. I'd prefer to wait for him if you don't mind.
Waiter: Godot won't be in tonight.
Diner: Are you sure? He usually works on a Thursday night.
Waiter: Yeah, well, maybe he'll be in later. Much later.
Diner: Okay, then I'll wait for him.
(A bit later that night.)
Diner: Oh, waiter?
Diner: Has Godot arrived yet?
Waiter: Not yet.
Diner: Do you think it will be much longer?
Waiter: Hard to say. Do you want to order now?
Diner: Not yet. I'll wait a bit longer.
Waiter: Suit yourself.
(Much later that night.)
Diner: Waiter! Oh, waiter!
Manager: Sorry, sir, all the waiters have gone home, and we're closing for the night.
Diner: Is Godot here?
Manager: No, I'm sorry. Godot called to say he couldn't make it to work tonight.
(There is a loud thump as the Diner collapses onto the floor.)
Manager: Sir? Sir? Are you okay? Looks like he's passed out. Maybe a glass of water will help.
(The Manager exits into the kitchen. Blackout.)
